Trompe-l’œil; this is what we call the illusion an object can bring along to captivate and mislead the eye. Illusion painting allows to imitate noble or precious materials, and to simulate architectural elements with a visual opening towards the sky (vault, columns, coving).
It creates openings to the outside (artificial window, loggia…).
By opening inside walls towards imaginary views or magnified sceneries, this pictorial genre evokes astonishment and admiration. Dreams and reality are brought together.
